Why You Should Choose Adoption

Why You Should Choose Adoption

According to the Adoption Network, about 135,000 children in the U.S. are adopted each year. This may seem like a large number, but there are still about 100,000 children in foster care waiting to be adopted each year. If you are considering adoption, you are one out of about 1/3 of U.S. families who consider it. Of this 1/3, only about 2% of Americans actually adopt.

Save someone’s life

Children in the foster care system are more likely to experience homelessness and drop out of school. By adopting, you can change a child’s whole life and future for the better, while making your life more fulfilling and beautiful in the process.

Consider health consequences

There are also many health factors that would motivate a family to adopt. According to the National Infertility Association, 1 in 8 women of reproductive age have struggled with infertility. Additionally, the cost of fertility treatment can go all the way up to $15,000 for IVF treatments per treatment cycle. Some might think about any genetic disorders that could be passed to their children, or any health conditions that would make pregnancy risky, and opt to adopt instead.

It’s not one size fits all!

Lastly, not all families are equipped to or want to raise a newborn. Adoption allows you the ability to raise a child at a different stage in life. This could be very rewarding. In fact, the majority of children in foster care are over the age of eight.

The bottom line is, there are so many reasons why you should choose adoption.

Whatever your reason for wanting to adopt, there are many different avenues for adoption. People adopt children from a family member, or someone who is known to them. There are adoptions done through a private agency, or through the foster care system. You may decide on a closed adoption where you do not know the birth parents, or an open adoption where you do know the birth parents. In these types of adoptions, involvement from the biological parents can range from little involvement to active involvement in the child’s life. In open adoptions, the biological parents can have an active role in choosing the adoptive family. There are so many different paths that you can take when you decide to adopt a child. It is a great idea to consult with an attorney to determine what might be best for your family and help you through the process.
